Personal Statement
My name is Deja Leflore, and I am originally from Carthage, Mississippi, but currently live in Brandon. I am a junior at Northwest Rankin High School and an all-A student who is actively involved in several organizations, including BETA Club, National Honor Society, Student Government Association, Northwest Rankin Business Academy, DECA, Interact Club, and Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy. I also participate in school-sponsored service events, such as assisting with campus beautification efforts and helping host events for students with special needs. In addition to in-school education opportunities, I am the only student from my high school selected to be a member of the 2026-2027 State Superintendent Student Advisory Council by the Mississippi Department of Education. An opportunity that allows me share my opinion and offer advice about educational opportunities and policy in Mississippi with the state superintendent of education.
Beyond school, I am deeply committed to serving my community and have completed more than 230 volunteer hours during my first two years of high school. My volunteer experiences include assisting children with learning exhibits and summer camps at the Mississippi Children’s Museum, participating in needs drives to support children and families through Canopy Children’s Solutions, and feeding the homeless with my church family. In addition to those organizations, I am the founder of Beyond THE STEPS, a non-profit focused on my passion of giving back in the areas that have helped to shape me: meeting essential needs and dance ministry for youth. I believe that youth can thrive if they have support. I am also a member of Youth Leadership Rankin Class of 2026-2027 through my local Chamber of Commerce, where I have the opportunity to learn more about local and state government. My career goal is to become a defense attorney, which has inspired my interest in studying Political Science and English in college.
